Spinning the Wheels
I really love it when I put my ipod on shuffle and it plays just amazing music sequentially. There are some songs that I just cant tolerate at work, and although some tracks/artists that I rarely listen to (i.e.: Gang of Four, Idlewild, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, old school Blink 182, vintage Fugees) seem to be taking up valuable space, I feel a strange sense of security that those tracks are there, ready to be played whenever. Today, however, I started the list off with the Notwist: Consequence, which was followed, to my shock, with Oddjobs: Sleepwalk (one of my favorite songs). I was surprised at the third track, Ok Go: Get Over It, but I listened to it for the Ira Glass benefit (he loves this band, I think primarily be/c the lead singer studied Semiotics, a kick ass major at Brown, and an interesting vein of theory in general). After that trip down memory lane, it was Justify My Thug by Jay-Z. Quality! I was so happy. Doves: Catch The Sun was followed by Alkaline3: Crawl.
Sadly the good run came to a quick halt at The Police: Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic Why do I still have this on my Ipod? I'm like a pack rat with songs despite that I never listen to some and will deliberately skip some, I keep them on there. I dont know, maybe I assume that there will be some random day where my Ipod will get lost and some good willed stranger will find it and upon glancing through my list think "wow, she has a good variety of music," and if I delete any one of those artists, well, they might think "hmmm, this would be better with some Police. Too bad."
I dont really know why I do these things. I listened to the whole track which was a good thing be/c it was followed by Ella Fitzgerald Louie Armstrong: Cheek to Cheek. Redeemed. Next, Antonio Carlos Jobim: Amor Em Paz, which is one of my favorites. I asked Eduardo if, when we get to Guatemala, this music will be playing everywhere. His answer, much to my shock and chagrin, was a firm no. I think I need to find a way to get into Cuba. Ive been dreaming about that since I was in high school and its time to get moving on that.
Okay so after that it was another song I need to trash (some Howie Day crap) but finally, Karate: Roots and Ruins. A good song to end on.
