The "Circus Wedding, Part I of II" Entry

Its a big wedding month. I know of two different people getting married this month, and I see people getting married around the city everywhere lately. Its June. June Brides. People feel its a safe bet with the weather, and I hear, it fits in easily with some medical student's schedules. I know this be/c I am in a wedding this weekend - the joining of two people (although they've been roomates for about two years now) I went to college with. The bride is who I am standing up for but its her med student fiancee who forced the scheduling, something about residencies. Clearly, I obviously care about this girl otherwise i'd have never committed to what is turning into a three day affair, beginning tonight with this "bachelorette dinner" and drinks after. Luckily for me the bride and I are close and we share dislikes and appreciations - one of which is for otherwise the absence of lame ass, "traditional" bachelorette events (be/c that tradition is playing on women being "virginal" and anticipating the big wedding night, while guy's traditionally go out and watch strippers be/c they're just so used to seeing and sleeping with so many women that now that its going to be narrowed down to just one (shock!) they have to go all out the night before. SERIOUSLY its so ridiculous, the way the two are juxtaposed, especially for people who have been living/sleeping with one another for quite some time). I find strippers disgusting...well, really anything having to do with this archaic tradition of bachellor/bachellorette parties (really, if you find marriage that limiting that you have to go party like an oil heir a few nights before then you shouldn't get married). Anyway, so after tonight's festivities, tomorrow is the rehearsal and the rehearsal dinner and saturday its wedding mania - hair, luncheon, wedding, reception. Pictures will be posted of the whole thing.

I am always a little shaken when my more "adult" friends (adult in the traditional sense) get married and even one has a child. I look at both occassions as equally confusing - really be/c I am not ready in any sense of the word, esps for the child. I am happy that my friends are at a point where they are taking these steps but it just makes me feel so behind, or unusual. Societal norms still expect women to breed and also expect them to want marriage like they've wanted nothing else; an education, a good family outside of a marriage, and personal goals in the form of personal expression, personal careers, or just personal interests pale in comparison to the talk shows and articles highlighting women and marriage. I just feel like I don't fit, which is nothing new, but its not a welcomed feeling.

Anyway, I spoke to the bride a few minutes ago - she'd been awake since 4am. Lordy. Its not even the day before the wedding. I think she's desperate to get out of the situation (most of the circus aspects to this wedding seem to be instigated by her mother) - she even offered to come pick me up (very spontaneously) and drive me to the burbs tonight. Anyone who volunteers to get in a car at 4 on a Thursday and deal with rush hour to and from downtown must really be desperate. I plan on buying her lots of drinks to hopefully take the edge off.

JOSE + 10

I survived the weekend and came out pretty interested in this new arena of sport previously foreign to me; football, soccer, what have you. Eduardo had me on a pretty regimented schedule... I sort of felt like it was taking over our lives and we have about a month left. The best part of being a new fan is that I really didnt have any allegiances to any particular team, although you would think that I would want the US to win, which would have been nice, but I was happy when any team won, really, especially Mexico. I seem to have a fascination and some genuine adoration for the Latin culture so you can imagine my delight with the latest Adidas commercial set The Impossible. I have only seen part one of the two, Equipo 60 but its really a great commercial, in part be/c of the music (I have seen round the net that its DAllouete by RJD2) and also be/c the two little kids are so cute and I just love their accents and of course, how the actual players jump out of their presumably, imaginations. I mean, who didnt play those type of games name your best team with whomever you want when they were little? When I did that, the teams were usually of, say, famous TV actors or movie stars. Its just by far the best ad I have seen in awhile. The best part is that the second half, Partido, is going to premier sometime during the World Cup so its like, a mini movie, two part drama or something. Its also nice to watch this game with someone who actually knows the players, the game, and isn't completely obnoxiously rooting for one team over the other (although Eduardo generally roots for the underdog).
